Food Drive

Thirteen Spring Creek students passed out 1,000 paper bags asking for non-perishable food donations. They then went back through the neighborhoods to gather up the biggest collection in recent years. The students had been fervently praying that the community would be generous - He answered their prayers! The food will be used to make Thanksgiving baskets for area needy families.

Walking is Fun!

Spring Creek Adventist School students were very excited to walk around their school today! Why? PACE donated pedometers to each student. The students were thrilled to see how their steps added up all day. In their physical education class they are trying to "walk around the world." They have joined an online pedometer step and mile recording program for kids school-age children. Students can virtually walk around the USA with their classmates. The pedometers made walking and physical exercise fun. Thanks PACE!

Spring Creek Adventist School Students are Making a Difference

“Making a Difference,” from Christmas trees to canned goods, the Spring Creek Adventist School students have made this their theme for the 2010-2011 school year. The Boy Who Changed the World by Andy Andrews, Think Big by Ben Carson and The Christmas Jar by Jason Wright have all helped the students to remember that they can have an effect on the world around them.

This fall, walking around neighborhoods and handing out hundreds of grocery bags, started the students on their journey of helping. Then a week later, picking up those bags, now full of food, and turning around and re-distributing that food to families in need. They did all of this with a spring in their step and “Should we knock on one more door?”

The month of November found the parents documenting all acts of kindness. Small ones like reading to a sibling to raking the neighbor’s leaves, were given a paper feather. Then for the Thanksgiving Day celebration they wore the headdresses they made from their “feathers.” There were some pretty big headdresses! Again, it was re-iterated to them how small things can make huge changes in their world. Like the small stone that creates ripples in a large pond.

December found the school collecting change to “pay it forward.” A way to thank God for the blessings He has given us all. On the last day before Christmas break the Spring Creek students had a field trip to a local Christmas tree farm. They were able to pick out the perfect tree for a local family that would not have one that year. Then they also donated the jar of change and bills to this same family, who the year before had been homeless and spent Christmas in a hotel room.

The spring will hold more opportunities for scheduled community service projects but I think that the students are creating their own moments to make a difference. With the knowledge that young people do not have to wait until they are older, they can go out with confidence to change their world now!

Christmas 2010

We had a great Christmas celebration our last day of school. A field trip to the Christmas Tree Farm, where we cut down a tree to donate. Hay ride, hot chocolate, marshmallow roast and singing "Jingle Bells." So much fun! Then we went back to the school for an international feast to cap off our international studies project. The kids did a wonderful job and the food was incredible! They begged to do it again. We also were able to donate a "Christmas Jar" and spread God's goodness to a needy family. I encourage you to start your own Christmas Jar and "pay it forward." Happy New Year to you all. May you find God's peace and love in 2011!

What is Make A Difference Day?

Make A Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others -- a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Everyone can participate. Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, Make A Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October.

Millions have participated. In 2009, 3 million people cared enough about their communities to volunteer on that day, accomplishing thousands of projects in hundreds of towns. Your project can be as large or as small as you wish! Look around your community and see what needs to be done. Or use the ideas on this site for inspiration.

Who takes part in Make A Difference Day?

Anyone. Young and old, individuals and groups, anyone can carry out a volunteer project that helps others. It might be as ambitious as collecting truckloads of clothing for the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor or relative. USA WEEKEND features volunteers and their projects in articles and photos.

How do I get started?

Look around your community. Are people hungry, homeless or ill? Are parks or schools dirty or neglected? No matter where you live, there's a need nearby. And on Make A Difference Day, millions of Americans are expected to roll up their sleeves to help others. You can act alone or enlist your friends, family and co-workers. Good Study Habits

Parents please read over this article on improving and helping your child with his/her study habits. Parental involvement is key to their education. I appreciate your time and look forward to partnering with you on assisting your child to have a successful education.

IMPROVING STUDY HABITS
Unfortunately, children are not born with the study habits needed for them to succeed in school. They must learn them. Very often children begin school without the skills they need to do well. Here are some things that parents can do to prepare their children for school as well as to improve their study habits.

*Start early. Although it is not recommended to begin formally teaching children before they start school, parents can begin to set a good example for their children long before they start school. This can be done by encouraging learning. Parents should try to read to their children daily. Reading skills are very important for success in school. Reading to children helps them develop a love for reading. Parents should provide plenty of interesting books for their children, too. Finally, parents can set a good example by reading often themselves.
Parents should try to encourage their children's natural curiosity about the world. Parents can do this by talking to their children, by listening to their children, and by answering their questions. Parents should also try to expose their children to as many exciting, stimulating things as possible.

*Get involved. Parents should take an interest in their children's education by joining the PTA or by becoming involved in other school activities. If parents believe their children's education is important enough for their involvement and attention, their children will take an interest, too. It is a good idea for parents to get to know and communicate with their children's teachers. Parents should give their children lots of encouragement, too. They should talk to their children about what they're doing in school. This will help to reinforce what they're learning.

Once the Homework Begins...
Once children reach the grades where homework and tests are part of the curriculum, there are many things parents can do to encourage good study habits.

*Set a schedule. Parents should decide with their children what time each day homework is to be done. While children are in the lower grades, one hour a day will probably be enough. As homework and responsibilities increase, more time will be needed. It is important that children take part in these decisions. Children need to know that they are able to make decisions about their studying. Once children and parents have decided on a schedule, they should stick to it. If there is no homework to be done on a given day, parents can have their children use this time as quiet time to read or work on long term projects. It's important for children to get used to studying every day.

*Provide a study area. Parents should provide a quiet, comfortable area for their children to study in. It's a good idea that studying be done in the same place every day. Parents should make sure their children have the supplies they need (for example, paper, pencils, a pencil sharpener). Sometimes children's bedrooms are not the best place to study. There are often lots of distractions in children's rooms.

*Help your children get organized. Parents should give their children a calendar on which to record assignments and to check them off when they're completed. Parents can also show their children how to keep their work and materials organized and how to prioritize assignments.

*Provide reinforcement. Parents should praise their children for working hard and completing assignments. Parents should keep in mind, though, that homework is not always fun. Don't expect perfection.

*Offer help. Parents should be available to answer any questions that might come up. They should try to provide information without actually doing the homework for their children.

*Give children the responsibility for their own homework. Parents cannot force their children to study. Nagging and threatening don't work. Children need to know that they are responsible for doing their homework and for studying. Parents should give their children the responsibility, and let them suffer the consequences if they, for example, fail to turn in an assignment. The parents' role is to provide support.

*If the schedule is not working, try a different one. If the plan parents and their children have come up with is not working, they should change it. Perhaps two shorter study periods per day will be easier to take than one long one. Perhaps an early evening study time will work better than one immediately after school. Parents and their children should work with the routine until they come up with one that works.

Remember, children must learn that they are responsible for their own learning. Parents can make the difference by giving their children the tools to do so.

Special Visitors

We have special visitors coming during the first few weeks of school. On August 25 & September 1, Life Choices Family Resource Center, will be talking to us about peer pressure, bullying, goal setting and boundaries.

The fire department will also be visiting us on September 1, to go over proper fire procedures.
